AWS expands Aragón water infrastructure programme

AWS says its Aragón projects now replenish more water than its regional data centres directly use, alongside a new €3.73 million irrigation modernisation scheme.

Amazon Web Services says water projects it supports in Aragón are now returning more water to the local system than the company’s regional data centres directly consume, as it launches a further €3.73 million irrigation infrastructure programme.

AWS said two operating projects in Aragón are already generating more than one billion litres of water benefit each year. On the company’s accounting, that amounts to approximately 15 litres returned to the local water system for every litre used directly in its Aragón data centre operations.

The figures are AWS’s own water stewardship calculations and cover replenishment and conservation projects outside the data centre boundary rather than a reduction of facility consumption to zero. That distinction matters as water-positive commitments increasingly become part of how hyperscale operators describe the environmental impact of large infrastructure campuses.

The latest project is being developed with the General Community of Users of the Canal Imperial de Aragón, with technical support from Agrow Analytics. The programme is intended to replace 25 kilometres of open irrigation channels with enclosed pipework to reduce evaporation and leakage.

It will also add soil-moisture sensors, satellite monitoring, predictive irrigation technology, and a digital twin of the water network. AWS says the €3.73 million scheme is designed to save more than 10 billion litres of water annually after full completion in 2030, with benefits expected to begin during earlier phases of the work.

The project will include training for 21 farming groups representing around 10,000 farmers and 24,000 hectares of irrigated land. The infrastructure therefore extends well beyond a conventional corporate water-offsetting programme: much of the claimed benefit depends on changing the efficiency of a large agricultural distribution system.

AWS has several other Aragón water schemes at different stages of delivery. Its smart-irrigation programme in the Ebro basin covers more than 570 hectares and is now reported to save more than 244 million litres annually. A two-kilometre pipeline at Pina de Ebro redirects surplus irrigation water to a municipal poplar forest, with AWS reporting more than 770 million litres of annual savings.

Work is also under way to restore around 5.4km of the historic San Julián de Banzo water pipeline in Huesca. AWS expects the project to avoid more than 473 million litres of annual loss once completed. A leak-detection programme at Villanueva de Gállego identified 20 leaks across 45km of pipework and was reported to save 33 million litres annually during the project.

The company is additionally funding flood-resilience work in Zaragoza, where five storage and flow-control structures are being developed following severe rainfall in 2023. AWS says the completed system will be capable of retaining almost 300 million litres of storm water during an individual event.

Across its Aragón water portfolio, Amazon says total investment has now passed €21 million and that projects are expected to provide more than two billion litres of annual community water benefit by the end of 2026.

The water programme is developing alongside a much larger expansion of Amazon’s Spanish infrastructure. In March, the company announced plans to invest €33.7 billion in Spain to expand cloud and AI infrastructure, with much of the data centre activity concentrated in Aragón. Amazon said the programme would extend infrastructure into all three Aragón provinces and include supporting server assembly, repair, and supply-chain facilities.

AWS has previously reported that its Aragón data centres used approximately 68 million litres of water during 2025. It says the sites use air cooling for most of the year, with water employed during hotter periods.

The comparison between direct facility consumption and off-site replenishment is likely to receive greater scrutiny as hyperscale capacity grows in water-stressed regions. Water-positive claims measure a wider watershed benefit rather than whether a data centre can operate without local water demand, and the location, timing, and permanence of each intervention affect how those claims translate into physical water availability.

For Aragón, the scale of Amazon’s planned data centre investment means that distinction will remain relevant. The company is attempting to increase the efficiency of infrastructure well outside its own compounds while expanding the compute infrastructure inside them. The next test is whether reported replenishment benefits continue to outpace direct consumption as that capacity comes online.
