Ireland’s government is facing renewed pressure to reconsider the country’s prohibition on nuclear power as data centres absorb a growing share of national electricity consumption and large new loads test the limits of the existing power system.
The debate follows reports that Taoiseach Micheál Martin has indicated a willingness to discuss nuclear energy, while Fianna Fáil TD James O’Connor has already proposed legislation intended to remove the existing prohibition. That marks a change in tone around a technology that remains excluded by Irish law.
Two statutory barriers are important. Ireland’s Planning and Development Act prevents permission being granted for development consisting of nuclear-fission electricity generation, while electricity legislation also prevents generation orders from providing for nuclear fission. Removing those restrictions would therefore require political and legislative action before questions of technology, location, licensing, financing, and grid integration could be addressed.
The renewed discussion comes as data-centre demand takes a larger share of the electricity system. Central Statistics Office figures show data centres accounted for 23% of metered electricity consumption in 2025, up from 22% in 2024 and just 5% in 2015. Urban households accounted for 18% and rural households 9% in the same 2025 dataset.
Those numbers have moved data-centre power demand beyond a narrow connection issue. Ireland has become one of Europe’s most concentrated digital-infrastructure markets, particularly around Dublin, while the system operator has had to develop additional technical requirements for large electronic loads and exercise tighter control over where new demand can connect.
DataCentral recently reported on Ireland’s proposed fault-ride-through requirements, which seek to prevent large data-centre loads from worsening transmission disturbances. The nuclear discussion sits further upstream: rather than dealing with the behaviour of connected facilities, it asks what generation mix could support a substantially more electrified economy over the longer term.
Nuclear generation would not provide a quick route around today’s data-centre connection constraints. Repealing the ban would only begin a much longer process involving policy design, regulation, consenting, financing, technology selection, supply chains, and transmission infrastructure. Ireland would also have to decide whether it was contemplating conventional large reactors, small modular reactors, or simply removing the prohibition without committing to a particular technology.
The significance for the data-centre sector is therefore less about an immediate source of megawatts than about how far infrastructure demand is changing the boundaries of Irish energy policy. Electricity use by data centres has already become material enough to affect network planning, renewable integration, connection policy, and political scrutiny.
A formal government decision on nuclear power has not been made. Until legislation changes, nuclear fission remains prohibited for electricity generation in Ireland. The renewed debate nonetheless shows how sustained growth in large digital loads is pulling questions once treated as politically settled back into the country’s power strategy.
