NxN enters Portugal with Évora acquisition
Summary
  • NxN has bought an operational, fully commercialised 1MW data centre in Évora.
  • The acquisition gives the Spanish operator an immediate operating base in Portugal through NxN Portugal.
  • NxN says it intends to invest up to €100 million over three years, although the sum is not yet tied to specific projects.

NxN Data Centers has entered the Portuguese market by acquiring an operational 1MW data centre in Évora, adding a live facility to an Iberian platform that already includes projects in Madrid and Valencia.

The Spanish operator said the Évora facility is already commercially occupied and serving customers in Portugal. The asset will be operated through NxN Portugal and gives the company a functioning base from which to pursue further development and acquisitions.

NxN has also set out an intention to invest up to €100 million in Portugal over the next three years. The company has been explicit that the figure is not currently attached to a defined project, making it an expansion envelope rather than committed construction expenditure.

The distinction is important in a market where large investment figures can run considerably ahead of secured land, power, planning, and construction. NxN said it is examining further opportunities in the country rather than announcing a second Portuguese site alongside the acquisition.

An operating foothold rather than a greenfield start

Évora gives NxN something that a new-build market entry cannot provide immediately: an existing, energised asset with customers already using it. The 1MW facility is modest compared with the hyperscale campuses now being proposed across Iberia, but its operational status shortens the gap between market entry and revenue-producing capacity.

NxN describes Évora as part of the corridor between Lisbon and Madrid and as the first Portuguese component of its wider sovereign digital-infrastructure platform. The company was established in 2023 and says its long-term plan could encompass as many as 10 data centres across the Iberian Peninsula.

Its current Spanish programme is considerably larger than the acquired Portuguese site. NxN says its Madrid facility has 8,500 square metres of space and 15MW of capacity intended for artificial-intelligence workloads. The company is spending €20 million on its modernisation and says the facility has two independent 7.5MW electrical feeds.

A separate Valencia development is expected to open in 2027 with more than 6MVA of power. NxN says that design will support different rack-density profiles and cooling approaches, including direct-to-chip liquid cooling and immersion systems.

The operator also markets water-free cooling and renewable electricity as design principles across its platform. Those are company targets rather than independently verified performance results, but they indicate the engineering model NxN intends to carry into any additional Portuguese development.

Portugal joins the Iberian capacity push

The acquisition adds another operator to a Portuguese market increasingly linked to the wider Iberian data centre build-out rather than treated as a standalone geography. Spain has attracted a large development pipeline around Madrid, Aragón, and other regions, while Portugal has increasingly been positioned around international connectivity, renewable-power availability, and alternative locations outside the largest European metropolitan clusters.

For NxN, Évora also fits a strategy of building in markets where it believes established hubs do not fully meet demand for scalable, high-density infrastructure. An existing facility can serve as the operational base while larger greenfield opportunities move through the much slower process of land acquisition, grid connection, permitting, financing, and construction.

The €100 million figure should therefore be read against those development dependencies. NxN has not assigned the capital to a particular second site, capacity target, or construction timetable. Its immediate Portuguese asset remains the 1MW Évora facility.

The company says that capacity is already commercialised, giving it a customer base from the point of acquisition rather than requiring the new subsidiary to wait for a greenfield build before entering operation.

If additional developments follow, power availability and the ability to deliver the company’s high-density cooling and resilience specifications will determine how far the Portuguese platform moves beyond the initial Évora foothold. For now, the acquisition converts NxN’s Iberian strategy from an exclusively Spanish development programme into an operating presence on both sides of the border.
