Magnora Data Center has secured a firm grid connection agreement for its planned data centre development in Hämeenlinna, Finland, putting an electricity delivery date against a project that has moved quickly through land, permitting, and power negotiations.
The company said the connection is scheduled to become available in the first quarter of 2029. An accelerated process could bring that forward into the second half of 2028, although Magnora has not said that the earlier date is guaranteed.
The agreement replaces one of the larger uncertainties surrounding the project. Magnora initially presented Hämeenlinna as a 120MW AI-ready development, but now says the opportunity has expanded into a substantially larger, multi-site campus beyond the initial phase. It has not disclosed a revised capacity figure.
The site sits north of Helsinki in the Helsinki-Tampere corridor. Earlier project information described around 150,000 square metres of development land, proximity to an electricity substation, fibre connectivity, and the potential to recover waste heat from the facility.
Magnora has also signed a separate letter of intent with a local utility covering district heating, backup power, and additional electricity supply. Those elements could become increasingly important as the project moves beyond the basic question of whether a grid connection exists towards how the campus will operate within the local energy system.
For large Nordic developments, the distinction between a notional power requirement and a contracted connection has become increasingly material. Europe has no shortage of announced data centre capacity, but transmission constraints and multi-year connection programmes mean that projects with secured land and grid access occupy a different commercial position from schemes still waiting in connection queues.
DataCentral has recently tracked the way electricity availability is pulling new European developments away from the most established hubs, where land and connection capacity are more difficult to secure. Hämeenlinna fits that pattern: its value is not simply its distance from Helsinki, but the combination of developable land, transmission access, fibre, and potential integration with the surrounding heat network.
The connection timetable also illustrates the length of the infrastructure cycle. Even with a firm agreement in place, the scheduled energisation point remains more than two years away. Bringing the date forward would improve the project’s delivery position, but substantial electrical and site infrastructure still has to be coordinated before compute load can arrive.
Magnora said it has secured the project, a building permit, the firm grid agreement, and the utility letter of intent in less than eight months. The next test is whether those ingredients can be converted into committed customer demand and a construction programme aligned with the 2028-29 power window.
