EXA Infrastructure will build a 6,552km transatlantic subsea cable between New Jersey and Somerset, adding more than 500Tbps of planned capacity across 24 fibre pairs between North America and Europe.

The EXA Meridian system is targeted to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2029. It will become the company’s ninth transatlantic cable and will connect to a new landing station at Brean before using terrestrial routes towards Slough and EXA’s wider pan-European backbone.

EXA has reached Contract in Force with subsea supplier Xtera, moving the scheme beyond an early concept and into the delivery chain. The company also said it has secured significant anchor-customer commitments from hyperscale and neocloud customers, although those customers have not been named.

The system is being designed around a shift in the way the largest connectivity buyers procure international capacity. Rather than buying only individual wavelengths, some hyperscale customers increasingly acquire spectrum or entire fibre pairs, giving them greater control over transmission equipment and future capacity upgrades.

For data centre markets, the cable is part of the physical infrastructure required to support increasingly distributed cloud and AI systems. A facility may have sufficient power and rack capacity, but its usefulness still depends on high-capacity routes connecting it to other campuses, regions, cloud services, and users.

Brean adds another route into the UK

Meridian will land on the Somerset coast at Brean, where EXA already has transatlantic infrastructure. The new landing station will connect into terrestrial routes leading towards Slough, one of Europe’s largest concentrations of data centres.

The resilience value of a new cable depends on more than fibre count. Landing points, terrestrial ducts, route diversity, network buildings, and onward connectivity determine whether customers gain genuinely separate paths or simply more capacity along infrastructure that later converges.

EXA says Meridian will integrate directly into infrastructure it owns and operates across Europe. That gives the operator control over both the transatlantic system and much of the onward terrestrial network rather than ending the product at the beach landing.

The cable’s 24 fibre pairs are intended to support wholesale customers with very large capacity requirements. At more than 500Tbps in aggregate design capacity, the system is being built for demand expected towards the end of the decade rather than current traffic alone.

EXA attributes that demand to cloud, AI, and distributed data centre architectures. Those workloads generate large volumes of east-west traffic between compute environments, storage platforms, and user markets, increasing the value of high-capacity links between North America and Europe.

Network construction follows compute

Europe’s data centre geography is also becoming more dispersed as power and planning constraints push new capacity towards secondary markets. That makes long-haul fibre increasingly important because new compute locations have to connect back to existing cloud regions, carrier hotels, internet exchanges, and customer networks.

New optical transmission technology can increase the capacity available on existing fibres, but it cannot create physical path diversity where routes do not exist. New subsea systems therefore remain part of the infrastructure build-out even as each fibre pair carries progressively more data.

Meridian is still a multi-year construction project. Route engineering, cable manufacture, permits, marine installation, landing infrastructure, terrestrial connections, and commissioning all have to be completed before the first customer traffic can cross the system.

The Q4 2029 target also means customers making capacity commitments today are procuring several years ahead. That is consistent with the timescales involved in both subsea networks and large data centre campuses, where infrastructure has to be ordered well before demand is fully operational.

For the UK data centre market, Meridian adds another planned layer beneath the expansion of compute. Megawatts, cooling plant, and server halls create processing capacity; fibre determines how effectively that capacity can participate in an international infrastructure platform.
