Reabold Resources has started a feasibility study into co-locating power generation and data centre infrastructure at the West Newton gas field in East Yorkshire, using gas produced on site to supply the computing load.

The study is running alongside preparations for further work on the West Newton A-2 well, where operator Rathlin Energy plans recompletion, stimulation, and testing. Reabold disclosed the data centre work in a regulatory announcement on 9 September.

The company said West Newton’s onshore location, scale, and proximity to existing grid and transport infrastructure make it potentially suitable for local power generation and data centre development. No final data centre design, customer, electrical capacity, planning timetable, or investment decision has been announced.

The immediate upstream programme at WNA-2 is expected to cost approximately £2.5 million gross, excluding contingency. Preparatory work includes access-road activity and procurement of long-lead items, with final engineering and contract awards still under way.

Reabold holds an economic interest of approximately 69.9% in the West Newton licence through a combination of its shareholding in Rathlin and a direct licence interest.

The data centre concept develops an idea the company has been discussing publicly for several months. In April, Reabold referred to the possibility of small-scale power generation using initial West Newton gas flows, including a bitcoin-mining installation intended to demonstrate the potential for gas-fuelled computing infrastructure.

By May, the company was discussing a substantially larger potential data centre proposition with industry participants. DCD reported that Reabold saw scope for a project of up to 100MW and more than 20 years of potential energy production, although those figures do not appear as committed capacity in the latest feasibility announcement.

The new RNS is therefore more important as evidence that formal feasibility work is under way than as confirmation of a 100MW development. The scheme remains at an early stage and depends on the technical and commercial outcome of both the gas project and the data centre study.

Generating electricity at the wellhead could address one problem facing UK data centre developers: securing large grid connections in areas where new transmission or distribution capacity can take years to deliver. A facility using dedicated generation behind the meter could reduce its dependence on imported grid power for the primary load.

It would not eliminate infrastructure constraints. A data centre still needs a resilient electrical architecture, backup arrangements, cooling, fibre connectivity, planning consent, and a commercial user prepared to commit to the location. Any design using natural gas as the main energy source would also face questions around carbon emissions, air quality, fuel availability, generation efficiency, and the regulatory treatment of long-term fossil-fuelled power.

The resilience design would be especially important if the facility depended directly on production from one gas field. Operators generally design critical loads around multiple layers of electrical redundancy, and the feasibility study will need to establish how on-site generation interacts with grid connections, backup equipment, maintenance periods, and interruptions to gas production.

West Newton has been promoted by Reabold as a potential contributor to UK domestic gas supply. Turning part of that resource into electricity for computing would represent a different commercial route, effectively bringing the energy source and end load onto the same site.

Whether that model progresses now depends on two sets of engineering results. Rathlin must advance the well programme and demonstrate the underlying gas resource, while the data centre study must show that a commercially viable facility can be permitted, powered, cooled, connected, and operated there. Until those conditions are met, West Newton remains a power-and-data-centre feasibility project rather than committed capacity.
