Vertiv plans to add 7,000 square metres to its manufacturing and testing facility in Letterkenny, Ireland, as the critical-infrastructure supplier expands production capacity for power and cooling equipment used in AI, colocation, and hyperscale data centres.
The company intends to submit a planning application to Donegal County Council for the extension. If approved and delivered, the project is expected to support the creation of up to 300 additional jobs in the region.
Vertiv said the roles would span engineering and operations and would add manufacturing capacity while expanding technical expertise around power, cooling, and industrialised infrastructure. The company has already onboarded more than 500 employees across its operations in Ireland and the North West since the beginning of 2026.
The Letterkenny site is part of a wider regional footprint that includes Burnfoot in Donegal, Campsie in Derry, a central procurement office in Limerick, and sales and service operations in Dublin.
The Irish Government is supporting the proposed investment through IDA Ireland. The announcement does not disclose a capital expenditure figure or a detailed construction timetable, and the extension remains subject to the planning process.
Supply chain capacity follows compute growth
The expansion is not a data centre project in the conventional sense, but it sits directly in the physical supply chain required to build them. Data centre operators can secure land, power, and customer demand yet still face delivery delays when electrical and cooling equipment cannot be manufactured, tested, and integrated quickly enough.
That bottleneck has become more visible as AI infrastructure increases both the quantity and technical complexity of equipment required for each megawatt of deployed IT load. Higher-density halls require larger electrical systems, more sophisticated thermal management, and increasing levels of factory integration before equipment reaches the construction site.
Manufacturing and testing capacity therefore affects the buildability of the wider project pipeline. Prefabricated power modules, cooling systems, switchgear assemblies, and other industrialised components can reduce site labour and commissioning work, but only if suppliers have sufficient factory throughput.
Vertiv’s Letterkenny proposal expands that upstream capacity rather than adding operational IT megawatts itself. The distinction is important: the investment is evidence of demand moving through the data centre supply chain, not evidence that another 7,000 square metres of data hall is being built in Ireland.
Ireland also presents an interesting location for that manufacturing activity. The country remains one of Europe’s most established data centre markets, but new grid-connected developments around Dublin face constraints that have increased scrutiny of additional demand. Equipment manufactured in the north-west of the island can serve projects globally without adding a hyperscale electrical load to the local grid.
Vertiv’s existing regional network also allows Letterkenny to operate as part of a broader industrial system rather than a standalone factory. Procurement, engineering, manufacturing, testing, service, and customer support are spread across several locations, which can help suppliers manage the large project packages demanded by hyperscale customers.
The planning application will determine how quickly the additional space can move from proposal to construction. After that, the practical questions will be production lines, test capability, equipment throughput, recruitment, and whether the new factory capacity comes online quickly enough to support customer delivery schedules.
As European data centre construction becomes more dependent on high-density power and cooling systems, manufacturing investment increasingly belongs in the same capacity discussion as land and substations. A shortage of grid power prevents a facility from being energised; a shortage of critical equipment can prevent it from being built on schedule in the first place.
